Was driving to the Commonwealth area on Sunday morning to visit a friend when I came across a big sign with Foo Kee Curry Puff along Commonwealth Crescent. Saw a long queue infront of the small non-descript stall and decided to queue as well and check it out. Is a stall manned by an elderly couple with their son. Most of the customers are buying curry puffs and chee cheong fun. Asked around and it seems they have been around for close to 20 years in the area.
The curry puff was really crispy and tasty! The skin was not oily at all! I ate 1 on the spot while it was warm and it tasted really good with a fine balance of spices in the potato, chicken and egg. For people who really like very spicy, this may not be spicy enough. But for the general, this level of spiciness is sufficient. What really amazed me was the fact that these curry puffs were not even oily after many hours! I had bought extras after the elderly ladyboss told me that these puffs will still remian oil-free and crispy after 12-24hrs, even in the refrigerator! I bough a few more - kept some till the evening till 9pm and it did not turn oily or soft. I kept 1 in the fridge and ate it the next day and it still taste good! Wow! Amazing! Really wonder how they did it! But definitely I have become their curry puff fan now.....the only competitor that is deemed worthy would be Tip Top at Ang Mio Kio. However Tip Top's curry is a tad too sweet for my liking and it does turn kinda soft after leaving it around for 8 hrs or more. So I will vote for Commonwealth Foo Kee curry puffs winning the vote with a slim margin.
What is best is that they also have other foods such as chee cheong fun. Seems that this was really popular based on the long queues and orders. At a price of 80cents, this is really affordable. But what blew my mind was that at this price, the chee cheong fun tasted really good, just like those at high-class restaurants selling at $3 per pc type. I had mine the traditional way - soya sauce and oil only, and the taste was really balanced! The soya was not too salty and the additional ingredients ontop of the chee cheong fun brought out the fragrance and flavor of the simple-looking chee cheong fun. Another amazing feat!
For those who are interested to go grab a bite, their location as follows :
Foo Kee Curry Puffs and Chee Cheong Fun
Blk 116, Commonwealth Crescent, #01-129, Swee Heng Coffeeshop.
Open from 5am till 12noon daily. Closed every Monday.
Truth is we do not know how long more this elderly couple will be running this business as they have done it for the past 20 years. Definitely wish that their business would continue and there should be more of such shops offering fantastic quality and value prices! These are the kind of foods and prices that we need at this currrent economic slowdown!
Cheers! |
