Halal Catering Singapore

Was just thinking of dropping a note regarding a  catering company I recently discovered.

I’ve been travelling a lot between Melbourne and Singapore recently and my schedule has been really hectic.  Was talking to my wife about plans for Christmas and last year she hinted about wanting to have it in Singapore where her family and most of her relatives are.

She doesn’t need to tell me but I already knew she wanted to spend her Christmas and year end with her parents in Singapore.  Since it’s going to be our 10th Anniversary on Dec 26th, I decided to throw in a party at our local residence and invite everyone over.

Was just by luck when I was asking around and an old friend recommended me to a local halal caterer that he had used a few times.  He gave me a website Halal Catering Singapore and I did a bit of a check myself.  Website was simple and easy to navigate.  For a catering company, they have a good range of food you can pick and choose from.  And their certificates and awards– reassuring.

Process was simple:

1.  Fill up the online order form

2.  Submit, and

3.  Wait.

I’d waited for about 10 minutes before I got a call.  Not bad for service.

Well, to make things short, the day came and we had Christine’s relatives from all over Singapore at our place for dinner.  Was glad they really enjoyed the food.  And the in-laws were impressed by the quality.

One more successful event held..and by the end of the evening, one glowing Christine.

Hua Ting Restaurant’s Extra-ordinary poor service – ordinary food

Having had excellent meals @ Hua Ting Restaurant over the years, we decided to hold a birthday celebration there early September and made reservation a week in advance requesting for a good table.  On arrival we were somewhat disappointed getting a small table in a poor location, in other parts of the restaurant 4 diners were sharing a same-sizied table in a much better location.  When ordering we asked whether the restaurant could make one of the set menus for 8 persons instead of for 10, and were told that this was not possible, but that the portions were not big, so the 10-person menu would be fine for 8 persons. Mistake No. 1.  We ordered tea and had brought our own red wine, and were told that the corkage was S$ 30++ which is high for a Chinese Restaurant, but no big problem.

When they started to serve the meal 15-20 minutes later, no tea or red wine had arrived, the wine and wine glasses only arrived after 1 reminder, but we had to remind the staff 3 times to get our tea, and each time a different staff asked us what type of tea we wanted.  The PRC staff did their best, but was obviously not well trained, and should never have been released to be a front line staff in a supposedly reputable restaurant.  They also managed twice to drop prawn shells on our guests.  The food was very standard, and apart from the steamed prawns and the roast duck, the other 8 dishes extraordinarily ordinary,  the same big tough mushrooms were to be found both in the soup and the following vegetable dish, the fresh fruit included damaged grapes and unripe papaya and melon.

I should be added that our tea was not replenished once during the whole meal, until it was brought to the attention of the staff.  Needless to say that the food for the 10 person menu was far to much for 8 persons, and we had to cancel/reduce 2-3 of the courses.   Having vented our frustrations for the 3rd time to one of the many supervisors, they gracefully waived the corkage charge, and we were left with a 8-person food bill of over S$ 900 and a very bad lingering taste.  We are thankful that there are such much choice of excellent food in Singapore that we do not have to go back.

Seeing as to how it’s charging only $15.90 per adult for lunch ($17.90 for dinner, children @ $12.90 & $14.90 respectively), thought we might as well give the place a try.

First impression is that it’s a pretty cosy, with most of the seats being booths, thus ensuring a measure of privacy.

Everyone gets an individual sunken pot, which is great if you don’t enjoy having bits of vermicelli or tofu contaminating your soup (plus the hygiene factor for those mysophobes out there). The ***** are placed below table level just in front of you, which gives a great & easy degree of control over the heat.

For the soup base, we selected Beef Bone Soup & Seafood Soup (Sichuan Ma La & Chicken being the two other options for buffet)… not that there was much of a difference between the two. On a positive note, they don’t use any MSG at all; anything that tastes that bland can’t possibly contain food additives.

Their offerings are very fresh though, as evidenced by the photos, but sadly the insipid soup bases practically drain all cooked food of their taste, leaving much to be desired.

Their Sliced Pork is beautifully cut, the meat nicely marbled. There’re some cartilage attached though, which may be a blessing or a curse, depending on your personal preference (I personally like it, but the missus doesn’t).

The Squid Ball’s a treat, seeing as to how it actually does taste like squid. Not as awesome as the ones served @ Mini Steamboat Delight in Parkway Parade’s Food Court though.

Under no circumstance should one order their Mutton or Homemade Mutton (the later being marinated), this piece of advice coming from a guy who loves eating mutton. The 腥味 of the meat is simply overpowering, & is apt to contaminate the soup as well. I was only able to stomach the former with the help of their sauce, which took the edge

Frankly, the only thing I was fairly impressed with was their Man Tou, which was served with condensed milk. I only managed a bite, ‘cos my elder daughter practically snatched the last one from right under my nose. Can’t be compared to the ones at The Magic of ChongQing Hot Pot, but price-wise, it’s pretty decent stuff.

Huang Jia Restaurant

Imperial fine Chinese dining in a non-typical Chinese decor of dragons, bamboos or red lanterns. Instead, be captivated by the romantic crystal chandeliers, seductive crimson velvet and black colors of the dining rooms and the alluring beads of curtains all around the place. Very chic, classy and modern settings for a gastronomic delight fit for royalties.

Huang Jia Restaurant

Huang Jia Restaurant, located at Kallang Leisure Park is a new player in the Chinese cuisine market and it is amazing to see the amount of effort put in by the owner, Kwok Group in terms of standing out in their bold appearance, smart move of creating a team of executive chefs instead of relying on a head chef and of course, the delicately prepared menu, everything all from the heart. Would be a good choice for holding corporate functions, birthday celebrations and wedding dinners, which I’m sure diners would be delighted by the novelty amidst the usual. Tables are snapping up fast for their first Chinese New Year set dinner. Alternatively, you may turn to Huang Ting located at The Central, which is another place to look out for. Uniquely design of its own.

We were greeted with the restaurant’s complimentary mocktail and appetizer, very tantalizing and refreshing opening indeed. Most of the Cantonese-style ala-carte dishes here are served individually but there are several items suitable for two to four diners sharing, such as the live seafood, Peking duck and fried rice. Expect set meal choices during the weekends and good luck if you happen to go on concert nights (expect even bigger crowds).

The roasted Suckling Pig and Foie Gras was the first dish we tried. Rather delicious was the crispy meat, especially complemented with thin slices of Chinese bun. Unfortunately, Foie Gras is not my kind of delicacy.

A must-try specialty was the braised fillet of marble goby in thickened shark’s bone cartilage. The freshness of the fish made us sing praises in between bites. I like the idea of wolfberry seeds and mushrooms that made it such a healthy dish. What’s best is the shark’s cartilage broth that made the dish so astonishingly delicious as well. I simply love it!

Imperial Special Roasted Crispy Chicken dish triumphed in impressing us. The bird’s unbelievable lovely aroma of crispy, paper-thin skin made me forgo whatever diet rules I’ve been observing so far. Piece after piece, it tasted so well with the juicy and tender chicken meat, marinated with five-spice powder. We were told that this is a very time-consuming dish preparation but the waiting time was sure worthwhile as it is no doubt, a winner dish that all new diners should try at Huang Jia Restaurant.

Deep-fried Crispy Prawn with Mango Salsa

By the end of close to 5 dishes, we still have room for Huang Jia Special Fried Rice, which is a good choice for sharing. A flavorful Asian staple dish, it comprises of finely diced prawns, scallops, char siew and salted egg. A very generous variety of ingredients used for a reasonable price.

Final closing treat of the sweet Sea coconut dessert was passable though a slice of lemon slightly brought out the difference from the other restaurants. However, you may check with the servers for recommendations or even make special requests, which they would be most glad to oblige.

In short, a place worth venturing for a sensory experience. Enjoy.

Imperial Treasure Restaurants

To begin with, Imperial Treasure group is a rather new chain of restaurants that according to many is competing head-on with the Crystal Jade group, with very similar concept and locations, while menu items are generally priced slightly lower.

Within a short period of time, they have garnered lots of praises, including serving food that are both fantastic in taste and health.

Try the Double Boiled Shark’s Bone & Bamboo Pith with Gingko Nut & Fish Maw in Soup. Just as tempting is the Saute Scallop with White Egg and Truffle Oil, which is skilfully sauted to bring out the delicate taste of fresh scallops, with a light touch of truffle oil for an exotic taste.
