Curry Favor
Japanese curry flavored with the creativity and authenticity of Japanese culinary roots is the brain child of Curry Favor, one of the budding specialty restaurants in Singapore. Curry Favor stepped in with a mission in mind, that is, to convert as many as possible, into Japanese curry lovers, knowing and enjoying only the real good stuffs of Japanese curry. Definitely not an instant curry powder practitioner among the big and small Japanese restaurants in town.
Located at the Stamford House, Curry Favor does not have the typical strong Japanese-style settings. Instead, décor is kept simple with modern dark wood furnishing and light dim enough to create a cozy ambience in this small Japanese eatery.
For starters, we tried Beef Yaki (Tenderloin). Its bite-size beef cubes were awesomely juicy and tender, a must try for all, very highly-recommended. Cheese Katsu (Pork Fillet) is quite a hit especially, with kids. One bite and u can literally glee when the melting cheese oozes in your mouth, so take it when it is piping hot.
Main course choices are simple, divided into katsu curry, having fried meat (chicken, beef and pork) separated from its curry bowl, or stewed curry with meat or vegetables cooked in curry. All main courses come with miso soup or salad. My personal favourite is Mushroom Stewed Curry; it’s got a hearty taste of mixed variety of mushrooms cooked till so perfectly soft. Tonporo Curry (braised pork belly) is a winner dish that a weight-watcher like me succumbed to. Never a pork belly fan, this dish really changed my firm preference as the meat was just so succulent and mouth-watering and the carefully stewed meat simply enriched the thick curry even further, making it stands out among other dishes. Beef Curry with beef cubed and grilled before cooking it with the curry, retained the juicy taste and chunky beef, feels like eating beef steaks in curry form. Seafood Curry was less exciting though scallops and prawns were generous ingredients in it. For Katsu curry, you could try the Cheese Katsu (Pork Fillet) Curry as found in the side dish menu as well, a thumbs-up choice for sure.
What makes Curry Favor unique is that their curry sauce is specially prepared by their Japanese chef, using only fresh vegetable broth, a cooking process of more than 5 hours daily. Thus, the excitement comes when the different ingredients and meat used to stew, create different characteristics for each of their curry dishes. You will notice the different taste of, say, Mushroom Curry and Pork Stewed Curry, yet be astonished that they both had the same curry broth. Curry here tastes less sweet compared to other curries elsewhere and with its mild spiciness; it is acceptable for those who do not enjoy spicy food. Also, there is no coconut milk used, so it is still a healthy choice for most people. However, there is also other food to choose from the menu if you want to skip the curry department.
You won’t go wrong at Curry Favor if you have been searching for quality Japanese curry all this while or have not tried this particular genre in Japanese cuisine. Curry Favor is surely a good addition to specialty restaurants here that provide real food from conscientious research and effort and most importantly, from the heart, believing in their food and wanting to make an impact in people’s taste. Something we would love to see more.
